Iorio Arena to be Known as Rodman Arena
January 1st, 2014
Hockey players, parents and fans are well acquainted with the twin-rink facility on Route 1 in Walpole, just down the road from Gillette Stadium. Known as Iorio Arena since groundbreaking in the mid-‘90s, the facility was originally built as a training center for the United States Women's Olympic Hockey team. Since then it has since seen many Olympic medalists, hockey players from mite to senior, as well as figure and speed skaters, come through its doors.
On Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2013 Iorio Arena became history. Not the facility itself, just the name.
As of that day, 2130 Providence Highway is officially known as Rodman Arena.
The name change was precipitated by an ownership change for the thriving facility. In January 2013, Rob and Chrissy Barletta purchased the arena after running their hockey school RB Hockey, as well as several affiliated programs (including NEH and the Walpole Express junior hockey teams) from the training center for many years.
“With the ownership change, we knew a name change was also appropriate,” explained Rob Barletta. “When selecting that name, the choice was obvious. The Rodman clan – think Rodman Ford, also on Route 1 – has been a generous benefactor for our charity (RB Foundation), a long-time community supporter and a great friend. Don, Curt, Brett and the others share our deep interest in local philanthropy and operate their own wildly successful charity, Rodman Ride for Kids.”
“We feel a strong sense of community pride and know the Barlettas do too,” said Curt Rodman. “By working in partnership with them, we have the opportunity to place our name on this illustrious arena. This name change will, of course provide beneficial exposure for the facility and its programs, as well as for the various Rodman endeavors. But, we looked well beyond the bottom line when we decided to pursue naming rights. Our commitment to the community is steadfast and this name change demonstrates our commitment. We consider this an exceptional honor.”
The Rodman Ride for Kids (www.rodmanrideforkids.org) is an umbrella matching-gift charity that raises funds for youth-focused social service agencies that support at-risk kids in Massachusetts. Thanks to The Ride for Kids and the Rodman’s other initiatives, including Celebration for Kids, Car Donations for Kids, Disney for Kids and Theater for Kids, the Rodmans have generated $11 million annually for those in need.
